This is the first year ever that I have kicked off a new year with a foot race. I decided to take it easy after running the 10K on December 29, so for New Year’s Day I registered only for a 5K. I had a hard time leaving this morning because my three-year old son begged to come with me.

Less warm, but not cold.

Less warm, but not cold.

I dressed a little less warm today because there was no risk of rain. I wore a Nike Hyperwarm Crew with long sleeves, a Nike Shield Vest, and Asics running tights. I still wore the gloves and the hat, though didn’t wear my Salomons Speedcross 3 because I had to wash it after my last muddy run, so I wore my Saucony Peregrine. The 5K is a paved course, so I didn’t really need trail shoes. I loved the Nike Hyperwarm long sleeve crew because it has a nice brushed interior that felt soft and warm. The vest I wore has a high collar that covered my neck well and I wore it zipped all the way up. I ended up wearing the tech shirt from the race under my vest and over my long sleeve because it was still pretty cold!

Here’s what I wore, from Amazon:

I managed to get a decent pace and finished 13 out of 47 in my age group and 101 out of 389 overall.

Next time, I am going to try and bring my son with me on a race!
