As a mother of two young children, I do not have a lot of time to shop for clothes for myself. Let’s face it — how fun is it to drag two very active toddlers to a retail store? For me, not so much. This is why I do a lot of my athletic apparel shopping online. Sometimes I will pop into the store if I can to try things out if I am not sure, but usually I spend a lot of time scoping things out online ahead of time.
Here are some of my favorite places to shop, and how I shop with them is very much based on their store policies:
#1 – Athleta
I really love Athleta’s retail store as well as online store. They are easy to shop at. The store is kid-friendly as any I have ever seen and I really like the website as well. I shop at the GAP a lot and I like that I can shop for my family and my kids as well as for myself in one big transaction. Plus, if something doesn’t work out, I can return it any time. I once bought a really cute top that I only wore a couple of times and I had to begrudgingly return. As cute as that top was, I realized that after I wore it a few times the bra area is just a bit scratchy at the seam for me. A couple of people who reviewed the product on the site also commented on that but I thought maybe I would be one of those who were not as affected. I was wrong but they totally allowed me to exchange it for something else. Awesome customer service, so this makes them #1 in my book.
#2 – Under Armour
I didn’t shop at Under Armour until this year and they don’t really have retail stores so the shopping is online only for me, but they have an excellent online store with excellent return policy (see below). I also really like that they have PayPal as an option! As clothing goes, they also offer Men and Kids, which is really nice so I can outfit my little athletes as well as my husband when I shop at their website.
#3 – Lululemon
It is hard for me not to want to buy Lululemon’s stuff as many of them are really cute, but they are not my number one for a two reasons — price and return policy. When I shop with Lululemon I first look at it online and then I try to go to the store to try them on. They have a very short return window so it can be hard to make that transaction when you have a busy kid-dominated schedule.
#4 – Lucy.com
I first developed a relationship with Lucy.com when they were an online only operation. At the time, they specialize in yoga clothing (I was just getting into yoga and kid-free and husband free back then) but they have since cropped up a few retail locations and expanded into running apparels as well.
#5 – Title Nine
Title Nine is also a local company making fitness apparel for women founded by a woman. The name of the company is pretty obviously pro women in sports! The cool thing about Title Nine is their return policy, though it can be a bit more costly as they do attach fees to returns. What sets Title Nine apart is they have a special section of their website just for shopping for bras and they also have more variety in terms of different kinds of activities including yoga, climbing, running, swimming, hiking, and even “travel.”
#6 – See Jane Run
See Jane Run is a Bay Area company for women’s running founded by a woman. I became acquainted with through their races. Their policies are a bit more convoluted but fairly standard — you can return something if you have not worn or washed it and you can return if there is a manufacturer defect (within 60 days). See Jane Run specializes in running so they do have a good selection of cute running clothes and shoes from different brands. Here’s a rundown of the stores’ return policies:
